Turning 30

Yesterday was my 30th birthday. I don’t know exactly how it managed to sneak up on me, but I’d swear that just last week I was 25, and now I’m 30. I’ve been married for nearly 7 years. I have two kids, a girl and a boy, of course, and no intention of having any more. I have a dog and a cat. Good friends. A house in the suburbs. A couple of degrees I don’t use but still get to pay for every month. Dishes in the sink, and living room carpet that I’d like to replace. My life is exactly what I want, but it’s still a bit odd to realize that I’m here, living it rather than still at the “working toward what I want” phase. I’m an adult. A real one.

I had a wonderful birthday weekend. Friends came over for dinner Friday. Saturday afternoon my siblings watched my kids so my husband and I could go to lunch at my favorite restaurant and to a movie. It was our first date since the baby was born last March. Afterwards the sibs all stuck around for my favorite chili and delicious cupcakes and Trivial Pursuit. They gave me a ridiculous pile of perfect presents–cozy pajamas, beautiful and meaningful earrings, a soft sweater that I like so much I’m going to wear it for the family photo shoot with Martina Mr. Breeze gave me. On Sunday, I took a long bath in the big tub with both my babies and then we gave them both massages using the new techniques from the infant massage class I’m taking. After that, we had a delicious lunch at my sister’s favorite restaurant. Mr. Breeze and I did a little decorating for Christmas afterwards and finished the day by playing with the kids in the playroom until he and I were both nodding off.

I can’t remember a better birthday. I was pampered, fed wonderful food, and entertained all weekend. It definitely made the big three-oh pass more smoothly. I just keep telling myself I’m the same as before. I don’t have more wrinkles than I had at 29. I don’t have a bigger behind. I don’t have to worry that my husband thinks I’m old. He told me that I’ll always be younger than he is, 10 months to be exact, and since I think he’s exactly the right age, I’m going to go with that and be happy with my 30 years.
