Obnoxious, delicious, awkward, adorable, and 106

We went out to dinner, and I was reminded of something I cannot stand about mid-range chain restaurants–loudĀ  birthday celebrations. Texas Roadhouse has a particularly obnoxious version in which the most obnoxiously loud server is responsible for calling for attention, announcing the birthday girl/boy/woman/man, and requesting a round of “yee-haws.” There were three birthdays during our dining experience. I am reminded why we tend to prefer non-chain restaurants. Even with two small children, we are never as loud as three rounds of yee-haws.

Despite the irritation, dinner was enjoyable. The kids were in such sweet moods. I got about a hundred kisses between the two of them, and my meal was great. It was a giant grilled chicken salad with tons of purple onions, which are just about my favorite thing right now, even if they have made me so stinky that my husband is likely to sleep on the couch.

There was one more awkward aspect of dinner, though. It came in the form of a very familiar server. He looked like a younger version of my youngest uncle. The resemblance was startling, even his voice was spot-on. I was reminded of my grandfather’s philandering. He was a champion philanderer in addition to being a champion car salesman. Apparently learning how to talk people into buying a used Chevy gives a guy just the skills he will need to talk a woman out of her panties in the back of said Chevy. He spread his seed far and wide, and I wouldn’t be the least surprised if my younger half-uncle served me dinner tonight. It was a decidedly odd experience.

The evening ended on an adorable note. Tulip announced on the drive home that ice cream is “delicious, delectable, and delightful.” She apparently learned this on The Upside Down Show, and she assures me that she will never forget it. Alliterative and verbose, she is truly our kid.

Finally, I’ve got no better place to share this, so here I’m going to add it here even though it doesn’t go at all. Tulip and I planted a metric ton (no, not really) of crocuses, daffodils, and tulips last fall, and we’ve been counting the shoots that are starting to peek out every few days. Yesterday we were up to 106. Yay, us! If frost kills them, I’ll throw a loud fit. Wait and see. It will no doubt rival the banana bread incident of ‘05.

Wait a minute, if I recall correctly, you weren’t even there for the banana bread. Were you? All I remember is Abbey’s eyes getting really big and her spitting it out into her hand. Then again, my field of vision had narrowed a bit…

Funny how people like to remember fewer witnesses to the embarrassing moments in life.
