Civilization

People talk a lot about how women civilize men, but I’ve got to say that I don’t buy it. My husband is out of town for the week, and even now, five hours in to our time without the daddy, the rules are out the window. We were over an hour late for bedtime, and I ended up letting Tulip sleep in the big bed with Smiley and me. It’ll be like something out of Lord of the Flies by next Saturday morning. Maybe we’ll eat our little Piggy for dinner Friday night. He’s awfully succulent.

These trips are infrequent, but they’ve happened every couple of months since Tulip was six months old. They aren’t as challenging as I always worry they will be, but I do have trouble sleeping. I worry that I won’t be able to keep the kids safe. It’s during these trips that I truly appreciate my obnoxious dog. Usually he drives me a little nuts at least once a day, but when the daddy is out of town, knowing that the dog inevitably goes into rabid mean dog mode any time anyone he isn’t expecting comes into our house makes me very happy. Three cheers for rabid mean dog. He’s the only reason I manage to sleep.

Sleep is another problem during these trips. I can’t do it very well. I need the routine that my husband lives by. He has an internal clock that, over the last decade, has helped to set my schedule. I miss his steadying influence.
